What Is Scabies?

Scabies is a skin infestation caused by a tiny mite called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis.  These microscopic mites burrow into the outer layer of the skin where they lay eggs and live.  The body’s immune reaction to the mites, their eggs, and their feces causes intense itching and a rash.

Scabies is common everywhere, but especially in crowded, tropical, or resource-poor areas.  Because the mites move from person to person, scabies outbreaks happen in places where people live closely nursing homes, prisons, dorms, or families.

Symptoms of Scabies

  • Intense itching, especially at night: This is the hallmark symptom. The allergic reaction to mites makes the itch stronger in darkness.
  • Rash and small bumps: These may look like pimples, insect bites, or scaly patches.
  • Burrow tracks: You might see thin, threadlike lines under the skin these are tunnels made by the mites.
  • Sores from scratching: Because the itch is severe, scratching may break the skin. These open areas sometimes get infected with bacteria.
  • Crusted scabies (severe form): In persons with weak immunity, thick crusts form with many mites.

Causes of Scabies

  • Burrowing behavior: Female mites dig into skin layers and deposit eggs. Their waste also triggers the itchy reaction.
  • Eggs and larval stages: Eggs hatch in a few days. The young mites move on the skin surface, mature, and continue the cycle.
  • Allergic reaction: Much of the itching is actually the body reacting to mite proteins and waste.

Transmission of Scabies

  • Close, prolonged skin-to-skin contact: The most common way. Holding hands, hugging, sexual contact all can pass mites.
  • Shared items (clothes, bedding, towels): Mites can survive off the body for a short time (1–3 days). So sharing clothes or bedding with an infected person may spread scabies, especially in crusted form.
  • Crowded living conditions: Places where many people live close together shelters, dorms, care homes are hotspots for spread.
  • From asymptomatic carriers: Someone may carry mites and not yet show symptoms but still transmit them.

Prevention Strategies of Scabies

  • Treat all close contacts at once: If one person is diagnosed, household members, intimate partners, and caregivers should also be treated, even if they have no symptoms.
  • Avoid skin contact with infected persons: Until treatment is done, avoid direct, prolonged contact with the rash or infested areas.
  • Wash clothing and bedding: Use hot water and high heat drying for clothes, bedsheets, towels used in last few days.
  • Isolate unwashable items: Items that can’t be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for 72 hours (mites die without humans)
  • Clean living spaces: Vacuum furniture, mattresses, and corners; clean floors.
  • Avoid sharing garments or towels: Do not share worn clothing, towels, or bedding until all are treated.
  • Limit crowding and ensure hygiene: In group homes, shelters, dorms, keep distance when possible, and maintain good skin hygiene.

Scabies Treatment Medication and Supplements

Forever ImmuBlend strengthens the immune system, helping the body resist infections like scabies and heal more effectively. It combines natural botanicals and nutrients such as maitake and shiitake mushrooms, vitamins C and D, zinc, and lactoferrin, which work together to build a balanced immune defense. The mushrooms activate immune cells that fight off foreign organisms, including mites and bacteria that cause secondary infections.

Vitamin C and zinc help repair damaged skin tissues and support collagen formation, which restores the skin’s protective barrier. Vitamin D enhances the immune response, improving the body’s ability to recover from itching and irritation. Lactoferrin supports gut health and overall immunity by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria.
